A temporal investigation of crash severity factors in worker-involved work zone crashes: Random parameters and machine learning approaches

چکیده

In the context of work zone safety, worker presence and its impact on crash severity has been less explored. Moreover, there is a lack research contributing factors by time-of-day. To accomplish this, first mixed logit model was used to determine statistically significant their effects. Significant in both models included work-zone-specific characteristics crash-specific characteristics, where environmental were only daytime model. addition, results from parameter transferability test provided evidence that nighttime crashes need be modeled separately. Further, explore nonlinear relationship between levels time-of-day, as well compare effects variables assess prediction performance, Support Vector Machines (SVM) trained Cuckoo Search (CS) algorithm utilized. Opening SVM black-box, variable analysis also performed. addition identified models, impacts vehicle-level characteristics. The illustrated termination area most critical for crashes, this location highest increase severe injury likelihood. summary, study demonstrate separately time-of-day with high level confidence. Furthermore, show CS-SVM provide better performance compared models.

Highway Work Zone Risk Factors and Their Impact on Crash Severity

Numerous factors may contribute to high-severity crashes in highway work zones. Identifying these factors and then alleviating their impact is a challenging task that traffic engineers and researchers have to confront. In this study, the work zone risk factors that could increase the probability of causing fatalities when severe crashes occur were examined using a comprehensive approach. The re...

Latent Factors of Severity in Truck-Involved and Non-Truck-Involved Crashes on Freeways

Truck-involved crashes have higher crash severity than non-truck-involved crashes. There have been many studies about the frequency of crashes and the development of severity models, but those studies only analyzed the relationship between observed variables. To identify why more people are injured or killed when trucks are involved in the crash, we must examine to quantify the complex causal r...

An Investigation on Crash Worthiness of Different Vehicle Brands: A Case Study of Rollover Crashes

This study aimed at indexing crash worthiness capability of 20 most frequently used car brands in Iran. Since rollover crashes are one of the most important crash types due to their high impact on crash severity, they were chosen as the case study of the current research. In this regard, the data of 42,118 rollover crashes of urban and rural roads of Iran which occurred from 2009 to 2012 was us...

Development of crash-severity-index models for the measurement of work zone risk levels.

Highway work zones interrupt regular traffic flows and create safety problems. Improving safety without sacrificing the main function of highways is a challenging task that traffic engineers and researchers have to confront. In this study, the concept of using crash severity index (CSI) for work zone safety evaluation was proposed and a set of CSI models were developed through the modeling of w...
